Green Tea Metabolism

One of the ways that green tea aids weight loss and weight management is by increasing thermogenesis or metabolic
rate.

The effectiveness of green tea in stimulating metabolism is attributed to the main catechin, EGCG. As your metabolic
rate rises, your body generates more heat by increasing energy (calories) burned.

Green tea metabolism has been proven in the study carried out by University of Geneva. Subjects who were given green tea extract (EGCG and caffeine) experienced a 4% increase in 24-hour energy expenditure. When they took an amount of caffeine equivalent to that in the green tea extract, there was no effect on energy expenditure. Since thermogenesis contributes to daily energy expenditure, the 4% increase in 24-hour energy expenditure due to green tea extract would translate to a 35-43% increase in thermogenesis or metabolism.

From the findings, the researchers concluded that ingestion of green tea extract boosted metabolism (thermogenesis) and fat oxidation. Thus, green tea metabolism can potentially promote weight loss.

Bottled Tea: Why You Should Avoid It

Polyphenols, the antioxidants in tea, are famed for its health benefits. However, drinking bottled tea may not be that beneficial after all.

In a study conducted by life science company WellGen Inc. in New Jersey,  ShiMing Li and his colleagues measured the polyphenol content of 6 brands of bottled tea bought at supermarkets. They found the teas contained 3-81 miligrams of polyphenols per 16-ounce bottle. A cup of brewed tea usually contains 50-150 miligrams of polyphenols.

The polyphenols in bottled teas are too low to confer much health benefits. Since polyphenols are bitter, manufacturers add sugar but less tea to cater for the tastes of all consumers. You would have to drink 20 bottles to get health benefits from polyphenols.

Bottled tea is not good for the waistline. It contains added ingredients such as sugar that is high in calories.

If you want to drink tea for weight loss, it is best to stick with fresh, brewed tea.

In short, bottled tea is not a healthy beverage when it is high in sugar and low in polyphenols.
