Dr Oz Anti-Aging Supplement: Pycnogenol

Pycnogenol is an anti-aging supplement featured on ”7 Years Younger! The Revolutionary Anti-Aging Plan!” episode of Dr Oz show today. This plan is based on the “7 Years Younger: The Revolutionary 7-Week Anti-Aging Plan” book by Editors of Good Housekeeping.

(On the previous Dr Oz show, pycnogenol was recommended for tackling brown spots)

Pycnogenol Anti-Aging Properties
Pycnogenol is derived from the bark of the French maritime pine tree. It is an anti-oxidant and anti-inflammatory to fight premature aging as follows:

1. Pycnogenol stimulates an enzyme to produce more hyaluronic acid. Hyaluronic acid occurs naturally in the skin, connective tissues and joint fluid. It is lubricates and keeps the skin moist and plump. As we age, hyaluronic acid levels decline. This results in dehydrated skin with wrinkles and lines. By increasing hyaluronic acid in the skin, pycnogenol helps to increase hydration and improve elasticity. Skin may be more supple, smoother and have less visible wrinkles and fine lines.

In a 12-week study of 20 healthy postmenopausal women, supplementation with pycnogenol increased hyaluronic acid production in the skin by 44%. It significantly improved skin hydration and elasticity as hyaluronic acid binds to large amounts of water to the skin. Wrinkles were reduced and skin was smoother.  Based on these findings, pycnogenol supplementation may help to counteract the clinical signs of skin aging such as dryness, wrinkles, fine lines and loss of elasticity.

2. Pycnogenol has been shown to correct hyper-pigmentation and reduce the appearance of brown spots. It  protects the skin against photo aging due to exposure to the sun.

Pycnogenol is available as oral supplement and topical cream. It protects the skin both inside and out.

Recommended Dosage for Pycnogenol
25 mg, 3 times a day
