What is Forskolin?

Forskolin is derived from the roots of Coleus Forskohlii, a plant that belongs to the mint family. This plant is traditionally used in India as a herbal medicine.

How does Forskolin promote weight loss?

Forskolin acts by activating adenylate cyclase, an enzyme that stimulates Cyclic AMP (cAMP). One of the effects of increased cAMP is increased lipolysis or fat burning. As more fats are broken down for energy, forskolin may promote fat/weight loss. Scientists at the Penn State University College of Medicine found that most obese people have lower levels of cAMP production.

One study was conducted to determine the effects of forskolin on body composition. 6 overweight women took 25 mg of forskolin 2x a day for 8 weeks. No changes were made to their daily physical exercise and eating habits.
Results: Significant reduction body weight and fat content. Lean body mass (muscle) increased significantly.

Another study examined the effects of forskolin supplementation in 30 overweight and obese men. They were divided into forskolin group and placebo group. The forskolin group ingested 250 mg of 10% forskolin extract twice a day for 12 weeks.
Results: Fat percentage and fat mass decreased significantly while lean body mass (muscle) increased significantly. They lost about 4.52-10.26 kg (10-22.5 lbs) of fat and gained 3.71-4.78 kg (8-10.5 lbs) of lean muscle in 12 weeks.
The results indicate that forskolin is a possible therapeutic agent for the management and treatment of obesity.

In a double blind and randomised study of 23 moderately overweight females who supplemented their diet with ForsLean (250 mg of 10% Coleus Forskohlii extract) 2x/day for 12 weeks, there were no significant changes in body composition. However, Coleus Forskohlii may potentially  help to minimise weight gain or weight maintaince following weight loss.

If you want to supplement with forskolin to increase fat loss, it is best to use it in conjunction with a healthy diet and regular exercise.

    What about Twinlab? Label says 125 mg Forskohlii root extract standardized to 10%, and also includes 200 mcg Chromium polynicotinate and 344 mg Green Tea leaf extract. Would I take two instead of one?

    The recommended dosage on Twinlab forskohlii label: Take 1 capsule twice daily 20-30 minutes before a meal.
    Since each capsule contains 125 mg standardized for 10% forskohlin, you should take 2 capsules per day to get the equivalent of 250 mg of standardized 10% forskohlin (or 25 mg forskolin). If you are taking forskolin for weight loss, then the recommended dosage on the label is correct.
