Green Coffee Bean Extract & Weight Loss

What is Green Coffee Bean Extract?

Coffee berry is the fruit of coffee tree. It contains green seeds (also known as beans) where green coffee bean extract is derived from. Green unroasted coffee bean is rich in chlorogenic acid, which is a type of beneficial polyphenol (antioxidant).

Elevated Blood Glucose & Weight Gain

Excess blood glucose increases insulin, which is linked to weight gain. While insulin hormone plays a key role in regulating blood glucose, too much of it causes fat storage and prevents fat burning. Hence, controlling elevated blood glucose is necessary to prevent weight gain.

Green Coffee Bean Extract Regulates Blood Glucose

Chlorogenic acid in green coffee bean extract has been found to be effective for suppressing post meal blood sugar spikes.

In a 2011 clinical trial, 56 participants were given 100 grams of glucose and:
- no green coffee bean extract (untreated)
- 200 mg green coffee bean extract
- 400 mg green coffee bean extract

Clinical Findings:

When compared to untreated, 200 mg green coffee bean extract reduced blood sugar spike by:
14% after 30 minutes of glucose ingestion
19% at 1 hour
22% at 2 hours

When compared to untreated, 400 mg green coffee bean extract reduced blood sugar spike by:
24% after 30 minutes of glucose ingestion
28% at 1 hour
32% at 2 hours

This study shows the impressive blood sugar lowering effect of green coffee bean extract. The higher the green coffee bean extract dosage is, the greater is the reduction in blood sugar.

How chlorogenic acid in green coffee bean extract suppresses post meal blood sugar spikes:
- by inhibiting the enzyme, glucose-6-phosphatase that triggers new glucose formation and glucose release by the liver
- by inhibiting the intestinal enzymne, alpha-glucosidase  that breaks down complex sugars and enhances their absorption into the blood

Green Coffee Bean Extract & Weight Loss

Studies have shown that participants who took green coffee bean extract lost body weight and body fat, and reduced body mass index (BMI). The most recent study published in early 2012 showed that participants lost an average of 17 pounds after 22 weeks.

It is suggested that green coffee bean extract may promote weight loss:
- by increasing insulin sensitivity and reducing blood sugar levels
- by inhibiting fat absorption and activating fat metabolism in the liver

Green coffee bean extract is also beneficial for lowering blood pressure.

Why Not Just Drink Coffee?

Since coffee beans used for making coffee drink are roasted, most of the beneficial chlorogenic acids have been destroyed. So, drinking coffee does not give you the same effect as green coffee bean extract.
