Strontium For Bone Health & Osteoporosis

dr oz strontium 680mg, strontium for osteoporosis

Strontium is a naturally occurring mineral found in the soil, sea and plant. This trace element is chemically similar to calcium, which is absorbed and incorporated in the bone.

Strontium for Bones
Strontium ranelate is a patented formulation that was used in most clinical studies. Since strontium itself is not patentable, it is combined with a synthetic substance called ranelic acid, to get a patentable drug, strontium ranelate. Thereafter, large clinical trials were conducted on this drug.

Strontium ranelate has been shown to increase bone formation and reduce bone resorption, resulting in a rebalance of bone turnover in favour of bone formation. Its long term efficacy has been demonstrated in a wide range of patients, irrespective of risk factors, age and severity of the disease. It is effective for managing osteopenia, osteoporosis and severe osteoporosis. By increasing bone mineral density (BMD), strontium also significantly reduces the risk of vertebral and non-vertebral fractures.

Two large, long term clinical studies demonstrated the effectiveness of strontium ranelate in reducing vertebral and non-vertebral fractures.

A 3-year Spinal Osteoporosis Therapeutic Intervention (SOTI) showed that treatment with strontium ranelate:
- reduced vertebral fracture risk by 41%
- increased BMD: 12.7% at the lumbar spine, 7.2% at the femoral neck and 8.6% at the total hip

A 3-year Treatment of Peripheral Osteoporosis (TROPOS) study showed that treatment with strontium ranelate:
- reduced non-vertebral fracture risk by 16%
- increased BMD by 5.7% at the femoral neck and 7.1% at the total hip

Side Effects of Strontium Ranelate
Nausea, headache, diarrhea, gastritis, rash

Strontium Ranelate – Prescription Only Drug Medication
Strontium ranelate is only available by prescription in some European countries, Australia and in Asia. It is not yet approved by the FDA in United States. However, unpatentable forms such as strontium citrate, carbonate and gluconate are widely available as nutritional supplements.

Non-Drug Versions of Strontium
Strontium is usually bound to another molecule (citrate, carbonate, gluconate) to become a stable strontium salt (strontium citrate, carbonate, gluconate). Studies have shown that several forms of unpatented strontium salt had favourable effects for bone. Hence, it is suggested that strontium itself, irrespective of the attached molecule, is the active compound which promotes bone health.

Strontium Boost is a strontium citrate supplement that contains the equivalent amount of elemental strontium (680 mg/day) as was used in the strontium ranelate studies. It has been clinically proven to increase bone density at 6 months in post menopausal women.

Important: Strontium competes with calcium for absorption, for it is best to take them at different time of the day. Also, you want to take more calcium than strontium.
